In winter the Barcelona beach changes owners: walkers, runners and January sunbathers share four nearly empty kilometers.
The seasonal promenade
Running or cycling the seafront in January is the city's silent luxury: clean air, horizontal light and winter beach bars open with coffee and blankets. Some dawns' sea fog is pure postcard.
Winter swims
Some swim all year — winter bathing groups are an institution with cap and suit — but January water is for wetsuits or the genuinely brave. The beach bar's hot shower is part of the rite.
What isn't there
Sunbeds, lifeguards and most services close from November to Easter: the winter beach is landscape and sport, not service. Carry what you need and mind the north wind.
